It is my last wish to be burried sitting up.
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and looking at some of the amazing photos taken over the almost 200 years that photography has been known to man, it may sometimes seem that a picture can be worth ever so many more.
Some show the full extent of human cruelty, such as the infamous photo of American soldiers torturing and abusing an Iraqi prisoner in Abu Ghraid prison. Some show the horrors of war and how it hurts the most vulnerable, such as the heartbreaking photo of a napalm scarred little girl running from her burning village in Vietnam.
Some show age old truths, such as the last photo of the Titanic afloat that was taken just three short days before it sunk, which is the very embodiment of the adage that pride comes before fall.
Other pictures are endlessly inspiring, such as the iconic photo of African American athlete Jesse Owens defying Hitler by refusing to give a Nazi salute after winning several gold medals and proving the dictator’s Aryan supremacy theory was nothing but propaganda and myth. And some are just plain beautiful and uplifting, such as the countless photos of the joyful reunions of people with their husbands, wives, parents, children, and even pets. Since it was invented, photography has given us the incredible opportunity to capture a moment in time and keep it alive forever. And if that’s not worth celebrating, what is?
The History of Photo Month
Thousands of years ahead of technology, the Greek philosopher Aristotle was already contemplating what would much later be called the “pinhole camera”. The earliest surviving photo of nature was taken in 1827 by the French inventor Nicéphore Niépce.
At that time, it took days of exposure for a photo to be ready. Today, 189 years later, we can see just how far photography has come. (Well, except for selfies. Those should probably not be considered progress, as far as humanity goes, anyway.) Photo Month was created to help us celebrate the invention of this incredible means of communication with previous and future generations, so let’s not let this day go to waste and make some memories!
How to Celebrate Photo Month
s later, we can see just how far photography has come. (Well, except for selfies. Those should probably not be considered progress, as far as humanity goes, anyway.) Photo Month was created to help us celebrate the invention of this incredible means of communication with previous and future generations, so let’s not let this day go to waste and make some memories!
Photo Month would be best celebrated by digging up old photos we haven’t seen in years and marvelling at the times gone by and all of the incredible experiences we had, as well as taking lots of new photos to enjoy in the years to come. The little birthday party your significant other threw for you may not seem like a big deal today, nor may the walk you took with your toddler and your dog, but you’re sure to be looking back at both of those events very fondly in a while. We have access to such an incredible tool that lets us keep every memory alive forever that it would be downright wrong not to!
You could also consider taking a photography course. If you love nature, food, the human form, wildlife, or just about anything else, learning to photograph it properly will help you show its true beauty to others, and isn’t sharing something beautiful in itself? Photo Month is a time to appreciate all the things photography has done for humanity and continue that glorious tradition, so get out your camera and your photo albums and get celebrating!

History of Get Caught Reading Month
History has provided us with writers of every type, and books ranging from simple poetry to philosophy and complex scientific concepts. With so much exciting content in the world to read, it’s amazing there aren’t more people getting caught reading every day. In 1999 it was decided that there needed to be a celebration of reading and the authors that produce the works we love to lose ourselves in. So it was that the Association of American Publishers, the AAP, supported www.getcaughtreading.com in dedicating an entire month to being caught with your nose in a book.
Even more exciting, there are lots of celebrities and organizations that have joined in the cause! Mary-Louise Parker from the Big Bang Theory made a point of getting caught reading, and the Jim Hensen Company has used its puppets to encourage children and adults everywhere to read! Get Caught Reading Month is an important celebration for people everywhere!
Reading has helped to expand the minds of people everywhere sharing morals and spirituality, and even teaching people new skills and how to survive in situations they might not otherwise. Not to mention the ever growing library of fantasy worlds and stories to fuel our own personal mythologies and cultures. Without books, where would fandoms be?
How to celebrate Get Caught Reading Month
Well, it’s quite simple actually. You just need to dig your nose into a book and forget about the concerns of other peoples’ opinions. Take out your favorite book and read on your lunch break, take some time to read while you’re enjoying a quiet pre-work breakfast, and keep that book by your side on the bus. Who knows, you may run into other enthusiastic readers who share your passion, love your favorite authors, or may even direct you to new authors that you may love! Get Caught Reading Month is a great chance to meet other bibliophiles, so go out there and Get Caught Reading!

5 Blood Pressure Facts No One Ever Told You About
-
More salt might actually help you
We all know that too much salt can elevate your blood pressure, but did you know too little salt can be equally problematic? It’s true — if you have congestive heart failure. For those patients, restricting salt to less than 1.8 grams a day can cause blood pressure to soar even higher.
-
Your blood pressure can vary by arm
Blood pressure readings can vary from one arm to the other. Today, physicians are advised to take blood pressure in both arms.
-
Lifting weights is bad for you
While exercises to lower blood pressure are an important part of heart health, the type of exercise you do is also a factor. The most common cause of high blood pressure with exercise is isometric activity. Straining or excessive weights will cause blood pressure to rise.
-
Low blood pressure isn’t a problem unless you have symptoms
Many people have blood pressure readings lower than the normal 120 over 80. The only time a low blood pressure reading is a concern is if you’re symptomatic, and experience lightheadedness, dizziness, and fatigue. If this is the case, consult your doctor about necessary lifestyle adjustments.
-
This mineral is critical for healthy blood pressure
If your blood pressure is high, it’s important to diet appropriately. One especially helpful mineral is potassium — which helps to relax the arterial walls and keep blood pressure in the healthy range.
Know your numbers. High blood pressure affects one in three Americans — and it’s the third leading cause of death in the U.S. This May, celebrate National Blood Pressure Month by raising your awareness with the power of information. Then, use that knowledge to fight unseen, potential risks.
Due to a tendency to show either minor, or even no symptoms at all, high blood pressure has earned the nickname “the silent killer.” Knowledge of one’s high blood pressure — and then taking action — greatly reduces the possible risks of related health problems.
